Planting Hope Beyond April: The Pinwheel POWER Garden at Baker Branch Library

Each April, communities across the nation recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month by displaying blue pinwheels—symbols of the happy, healthy, carefree childhood every child deserves. Since 2019, Future Seed has proudly participated in child abuse prevention efforts, but this year we wanted to ensure the conversation continued long after April had ended.

Through our Pinwheel POWER Initiative (Providing Opportunities for Wellness, Engagement, and Resources), we partnered with the Baker Branch Library to install a Pinwheel POWER Garden that will remain on display throughout the year. The garden serves as a lasting reminder that protecting children is not a seasonal responsibility—it is a year-round commitment.

We are incredibly grateful to Ms. Ashley Broussard and the Baker Branch Library team for embracing this vision and partnering with us to create a space that encourages awareness, reflection, and hope. We also thank Future Seed Board President Brenda G. Jackson, Board Member Mrs. Hickman, our Executive Director, Dr. Toni Jackson and the community members who stopped by, picked up a pinwheel, and joined us in planting. Their willingness to participate reminds us that child abuse prevention is everyone's responsibility.

More than a beautiful display, the Pinwheel POWER Garden symbolizes innocence, joy, and the promise of childhood. Every pinwheel represents our shared commitment to ensuring children grow up in safe, nurturing environments where they are free to learn, play, and simply be kids.

This partnership marks an exciting step forward for the Pinwheel POWER Initiative. Our vision is to establish Pinwheel POWER Gardens at libraries throughout East Baton Rouge Parish, creating lasting symbols of hope and keeping child abuse prevention visible in our communities long after Child Abuse Prevention Month has ended.

Together, we can plant more than pinwheels—we can plant awareness, inspire action, and cultivate communities where every child is protected, valued, and given the opportunity to thrive.
